FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONs

How long is the Ride?

The route is just over 5.4 miles long and takes about one hour start to finish. We expect to be back at the Petaluma Community Center by 6:30 pm.

Didn’t the Ride used to be on the other side of town?

Yes: last year and three years ago we rode on the west side of town. We alternate between west and east sides of town. Unfortunately, planning a ride that takes in both sides of town presents big challenges for our Police Department who accompany us on the Ride.

Who’s organizing the Holiday Lighted Bike Ride?

The Ride is organized by Safe Streets Petaluma, a local non-profit whose Mission is to “...creat[e] safe, healthy and affordable ways for everyone to get around in Petaluma.” Safe Streets Petaluma has the help of Rebuilding Together Petaluma, Aqus Community Foundation, the City of Petaluma, and a long, long  list of supporters.

How many people are you expecting?

Because it’s an outdoor event in late December, the answer depends on the weather on the day of the Ride. In 2023, we had around 400 riders, in 2024 (a damp and cold day) we had 300 riders. Last year, in the rain, we had around 200 moist but hearty riders. Let’s say blue skies and 500 riders!

Is it safe for kids?

Yes! We have a Special Events Permit from the City of Petaluma and the Ride is fully supported by the Petaluma Police Department. We will be riding slowly and responsibly.

Can I ride a scooter (or a skateboard?)

YES!!! The Ride is for people on all types of wheeled devices (bikes, cargo bikes, unicycles, scooters, trikes, e-bikes, mobility scooters, one-wheels, skateboards, motorized wheelchairs, and more).

Can I walk the Ride instead of riding?

Hmm, no not really; the pace of the Ride is a bit too fast for walking. But you could run it…..

Is it really free?

Yes, the Ride is entirely free for all! We are asking participants to kick in a small donation to help pay for things like permits, insurance and printing, but donations are optional.

Do I have to register?

Yes! For insurance reasons, we ask that all participants register and sign a Liability Waiver. The link is here: https://form.jotform.com/262978037076973

What if I can’t ride the whole distance?

If the pace or the duration are too challenging, you always have the option to leave the Ride and return to the Petaluma Community Center or home.

Do I need lights for my bike?

Yes, definitely! The Ride will take place after the sun has set. It will be dark. We strongly recommend reliable lights front and back.

What about music?

If you’ve got it and want to bring it, don’t be shy! Just be mindful of neighbors.

Shall I decorate my bike

Bike decorations are highly recommended but optional. One option is using blinky lights from a supplier like Brightz. They’re offering us a 20% discount with the promo code Petaluma2026. (Some local retailers also sell Brightz lights). Grand Central Petaluma (on the Turning Basin) is offering the assistance of “bike decorating elves” to help people decorate their bikes on Friday afternoon, December 18th, just before the Ride.

What happens if it’s raining?

The weather has been a challenge that last two years. We’ve got our fingers crossed for blue skies and moderate temperatures. We’re saying “heavy rain cancels.” The Ride will take place if it’s raining lightly and we’ll still have a good time. Or, as some people say, “there’s no such thing as bad weather if you have good gear!”
